The hip-hop star (né Dequantes Devontay Lamar) died in Atlanta on Sept. 5 at age 34. A cause of death remains pending investigation. In a statement shared exclusively with PEOPLE, Lamar’s family reflected on their heartbreak at losing him, while also promising to ensure his legacy lives on.

The report also indicated that the late rapper showed no signs of trauma when his body was found and examined. His death was ruled an accident. The “Type of Way” rapper (né Dequantes Devontay Lamar) died in Atlanta on Sept. 5. An autopsy was performed the next day, with the medical examiner’s office saying at the time that his cause and manner of death was “pending the completion of laboratory studies and microscopic examination of tissue slides.
