A sheriff’s deputy has been honored for saving a child from an oncoming train in California.
Michael Castaneda, a deputy with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, was recently sitting in his car at a railroad crossing in Redlands when the train began approaching the SUV that was sitting on the tracks, according toCBS affiliate KCAL.
Castaneda, who was off duty at the time, said he saw a woman exit the car after attempting to maneuver out of the gravel and remove a child from the vehicle.

A now-former California high school guidance counselor was arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old student, authorities said.
Julie Tichon was a 37-year-old guidance counselor at YULA High School, a modern Orthodox Jewish school, in Los Angeles, according to apress releasefrom the Los Angeles Police Department. Police allege she repeatedly “engaged in sexual acts” with a 16-year-old boy between February and March.
“Educators and school staff have a fundamental duty to create a safe environment for all students, and when that trust is broken, it affects the entire community,” Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said in apress releasefrom his office.

San Bernardino Wildfire.Photo:David McNew/GettyA man was arrested on accusations he started a wildfire that has burned nearly 35,000 acres in Southern California.Justin Wayne Halstenberg, of Norco, Calif., allegedly started the fire, named the Line Fire, on Sept. 5 in the city of Highland, the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department said.Halstenberg was arrested on Tuesday, Sept. 10, police said, and is being held on suspicion of arson on $80,000 bond. It is not immediately clear if he has been formally charged.

An 18-year-old California man was arrested and charged with a hate crime after allegedly tearing down a pride flag at a Blaze Pizza and assaulting employees.
Igor Dragun is charged with a hate crime, assault and two other crimes for the alleged incident in Roseville, Calif., the Placer County District Attorney’s Office says.
The alleged assault occurred on Sept. 19, Roseville police say.
Citing police,KCRA,ABC 10andCBS 13report that the incident began when Dragun went to the restaurant to pick up a delivery and spotted a pride flag before allegedly throwing it to the ground.
