When Dalen learned about the formation of Hurricane Milton, he and his friends monitored the weather and planned a time to hit the ocean. On Wednesday, Oct. 9, around 4 p.m. — just before Hurricane Milton made landfall — Dalen and his friends grabbed their boards and headed to a local Boca Raton beach.

Julie Sulpizio is facing charges of murder and multiple counts of attempted murder after officials say Lake County Master Deputy Sheriff Bradley Michael Link was fatally shot at a home in Eustis, Fla., on Friday, Aug. 2.
Injured in the shooting were deputies Stefano Gargano and Harold Howell, Lake County authorities said during a press conferencestreamed on Facebook.

“I remember us saying it’s 135 miles home, or we keep going straight,” Lutzker tells PEOPLE exclusively. “With so much traffic, we’re still in the hurricane path. If we run out of gas, we’d be stranded somewhere unsafe, with no hotels available. So it was either push forward in search of gas or turn back home.”
That’s when the family, who moved to Florida from Long Island, New York, just two months ago, decided the best option was to turn around and try to ride out the storm as safely as possible.
