A new thrilling sci-fi series is on its way!
PEOPLE can exclusively premiere the first trailer forEarth Abides, an upcoming post-apocalyptic limited series on MGM+ that follows the story of the few survivors left in the shattering aftermath of a plague that has wiped out nearly all human civilization on Earth as they rebuild the human race.
In the next scene, Ish listens to a news report on the radio saying that a viral outbreak has spread across the country that is “highly contagious and lethal.”

After walking across a deserted parking lot outside and returning to his parent’s home, he soon comes across a nightmare discovery: the outbreak has caused significant harm as surrounding areas are left deserted.
“Did you sleep through the mandate, kid?” the man then says. “Whoever might be left is out of time."
Later in the trailer, Ish approaches a house — but quickly stops in his tracks when a woman (Dukes) appears on a roof and points a gun at him.
“What do you want?” she asks, prompting Ish to respond, “I haven’t seen anyone in the longest time."

Dukes’ character, Emma, then says in the following scene, “Everyone disappeared but me, now you … I was sure I was going to die alone.”
As tensions rise, things between the pair heat up as they share a kiss as grow closer with a developing romance. Emma later is seen pregnant with their child and Ish grows concerned over how they will survive as a family.
“How can we protect the child?” Ish asks, as Emma says, “I need you to believe in us."
Towards the end of the trailer, Ish and Emma face a new group of survivors, possibly bringing a threat to the home they’ve created for themselves.
In a statement to PEOPLE, showrunner Todd Komarnicki said of the new series: “It has been an absolute thrill to adapt George Stewart’s sci fi classic. And an even greater honor to deliver a show that is custom built for our moment in history. Because amidst all the wild adventure and story twists and turns, ‘Earth Abides’ provides proof that the one way forward for humanity is…love.”
