The series logline reads, “Rainbow Brite, a friend, hero, role model and creative inspiration who brings all the colors of the rainbow to the universe, is transported to a dark and gloomy place with a mission to bring color, light and happiness to the world.”

The character’s technicolor look, which features striped sleeves and boots, lots of stars and an arching rainbow on her dress, became forever iconic. The series was also adapted into the 1985 movie Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer. After the show was canceled, it found more fans as it was released on VHS. The character was also ubiquitous on merch, covering everything from books and albums to bed sheets and birthday cakes and was, for a time, Mattel’s top-selling toy.

Hallmark previously rebooted the character in a 2014 miniseries that streamed on Feeln, now called Hallmark+.Emily Osmentvoiced Rainbow Brite whileMolly Ringwaldvoiced the Dark Princess.

Varietyalso shared that Crayola will lead licensing and merchandising for the new series.

The Rainbow Brite news comes on the heels of announcements of other movies based on ’80s and ‘90s nostalgia. Lily Collins is set to star in aPolly Pocketmovie, whileDaniel Kaluuya is attached to aBarneyfilm.
