Charlotte Rose Benjamin ande.l.f. cosmeticsare here to turn up your getting-ready routine.

“It felt like a weird dream,” she tells PEOPLE — and a pretty spectacular one.

Benjamin has long been a fan of e.l.f. cosmetics, so joining the company for its new project felt like the perfect collaboration. The indie star revealed her favorite product is the brand’sClear Brow & Lash Mascara, which she routinely stocks up on at CVS.

“I truly have 10 in my bag, and I don’t organize it in a way that I finish one and then I throw it away, and then I start the next one. They’re all kind of half empty, but I just have to make sure that I have enough because I’m so dependent on that product now,” Benjamin adds. “I have to have it with me at all times. I feel naked without it!”

When Benjamin first received the brief from e.l.f. for the project, the idea of writing a song about empowerment felt “challenging.” The singer shared that most of her music is autobiographical in nature, but once she tapped into the idea that mistakes can be empowering in their own way, she found her way into “Hairpin.”

“I didn’t know how to channel feelings of empowerment in an honest way,” she admits. “But then I thought about how empowerment can be about making mistakes, doing what you want, ‘flying across the country for a doomed romance,’ etc. I think ‘Hairpin’ is about living for the story which can feel empowering.”

The unique filming process left the singer feeling queasy — but also exhilarated.

“Most people on the crew got sick. When you go on a ‘zero grav’ plane you do a series of what they call parabolas,” she explains. “The plane essentially goes up at almost a 90 degree angle, goes flat for 20 seconds and then nose dives back down. When you’re at the top of the parabola you are weightless.”

She continues, “We did that 30 times in a row. I felt so joyful and giggly the first 10 or 15 times. I threw up when we still had seven parabolas left, but I kept going. I totally surprised myself!”

Ultimately, Benjamin hopes “Hairpin” makes listeners “just want to dance and gives people energy and confidence” as they’re getting ready for their own nights out.

As for the singer, music has long played a role in her getting-ready routine, which she views as an act of self-care.

“I love getting ready! I could spend hours getting ready,” she shares. “If there’s an event that I’m excited about that happens at, you know, 8 p.m. I’ll start getting ready at 3 p.m. I’ll put on some music, I’ll put on a movie, I’ll get some wine, I’ll take a long shower, I’ll do every little thing. It feels so good to take care of yourself in that way.”

Get Ready with Musicwill be released on Oct. 15.
