The actress recently spoke withVarietyabout the future of exDavid Arquette’s character in the popular slasher franchise, saying she hopes audiences can see Dewey again despite his death in the fifth film, 2022’sScream.
“I understand the reasons they did it, but whoa! Talk about a missed character,” Cox, 60, told the outlet at aRock4EB charity eventon Saturday, Sept. 21, in Malibu, California.

TheScreamcostars were married from 1999 to 2013, and share20-year-old daughter,Coco.
But Arquette seemingly shot down hopes of Dewey returning to the franchise in July, after a fan called in toWatch What Happens Live with Andy Cohento ask about potentially seeing his character “in some form,” like a flashback sequence, in the upcomingScream 7.
“I don’t think so — I mean, I don’t know!” said the actor, 53, with a laugh. “I guess there’s a chance, but I haven’t gotten any calls or anything.”
He also denied that returning starNeve Campbellhad “spilled any tea” to him about the upcoming movie, in which Campbell, 50, once again reprises her iconic final-girl role of Sidney Prescott.

As for Cox’s involvement, she toldVarietyon Saturday that she hasn’t “officially” signed on yet forScream 7, in which she would reprise her role of news reporter/author Gale Weathers.
“They’re rewriting all the time. It’s not like I don’t know what’s going on," theFriendsalum said.
Of creatorKevin Williamson, who wrote the original 1996Screamand will direct for the first time with the upcoming movie, Cox told the outlet she’s “excited” to see him in the director’s seat.
“You can’t get better than that choice,” she said of Williamson, 59. “It’s going to be fun."
