David Boreanazplays an elite soldier in his military dramaSEAL Team, but when he’s off-camera, he’s pretty much just like every other dad.

“I just helped my son [Jaden, 22] move out of his apartment in New York,” he tells PEOPLE, of what he was doing in between doing talk shows and interviews to promote the seventh and final season ofSEAL Team.

“It was a test of patience!” he says with a laugh. “My son did most of the packing and setting it up for the new tenant while I helped from the outside, but it was a tornado.”

He jokes, “Parenting is such a journey. It never ends, and it never gets easier!”

TheBonesalum says his son is leaving the city to pursue his passions.

“He went to NYU, but he decided to take a break from it during the last year. He’s an artist and a musician so he’s staying true to his soul… you have to go with the beat of your heart,” he says, adding that he’s doing the same.

Boreanaz announced last November that he would be pursuing new passions after the final season ofSEAL Team(premiering Aug. 11 on Paramount+).

“There are things in the works,” he says, adding that he can’t talk about them yet. “But some things that I planted a while ago are starting to take root.”

While he’ll missSEAL Team— and the accolades he got from real elite soldiers who thanked him for such an accurate portrayal of what it was like to be in that branch of the military — he won’t miss what the intense shoots did to his body.

“I’ve had 4 MRIS in 4 months!” he says.

“I take good care of myself, but it gets to a point where your body’s not moving like it used to.”

“I was doingLIVE withKelly and Markthe other day [for the final season ofSEAL Team], and these two younger girls were there for a fashion show, literally like 10 years old and 12,” he says.

“Their mom was there, and she said they were just so excited I was there because they loveBones, and I’m just sitting there going, ‘This is so trippy!’ "

As for his 15-year-old daughter Bella — is she aBonesfan?

“My daughter is an excellent equestrian, " he says. “She’s a loving adventurous soul. Both of my kids are doing their own thing. I’m very protective of them, but everyone’s great. My son is a singer, an artist, and a musician, my daughter is in high school. Everyone is good.”
