While Deion, 57, has spent most of the offseason getting his players, staff and other members of the Colorado Buffaloes ready for the upcoming college football season, he’s just now adjusting to the fact that he’s a first-time grandfather after his oldest daughter gave birth to his first grandchild.
On Aug. 9, Deiondra Sanders gave birth to a son named Que, the eldest of Deion’s children revealed onInstagram.
Deion was the first to comment, writing, “Proud of y’all.”
And although the football season is quickly approaching, Coach Prime has cherished the time he has with his new grandchild. “Being a first-time grandfather is wonderful," Deion exclusively tells PEOPLE while promoting his newpartnership with California Almonds.
He then reveals he saw and got to talk to Que just before speaking with PEOPLE. “That’s the first time I’ve said that as well. Just seeing my grandson, and said some things, and he smiled and all of that, so it was wonderful because my daughter is still in the hospital right now,” thefather of fiveshares.
While the proud grandfather is still absorbing the news of the youngest addition to the extended Saunders family — after previously telling PEOPLE in April that “I haven’t digested that whole thing yet” — Deion is balancing that with all things coaching.
“Let’s take one thing at a time. I love coaching these young men,” he says of the Buffaloes, which includes sons Sheduer as quarterback and Shilo as safety, as the team prepares to kick off the 2024-25 season against North Dakota State on Thursday, Aug. 29.
The Buffaloes are coming off a rough first season under Coach Prime finishing the season 4-8 and in 12th overall.
This year, however, has been full of expectations with Sheduer Sanders coming into the season ranked as a top quarterback as well as this being the last season Coach Prime will be coaching his two sons. The Colorado Buffaloes have also made many changes to the team, including a complete overhaul on the offensive line but the main point of focus has been on the changes on the coaching staff.
“Eight out of the 11 position coaches are from the NFL,” says Coach Prime. “We have Adalius Thomas who played 10 years in the league, as well as one of the assistants that’s helping out as well. So the formula is just allowing those guys to be who they are and don’t ask them to change nothing.”
He adds, “They’re Hall of Famers and they played a plethora of years because of who they were. You want them to continue to be that person and give these kids the directions to their dreams, and their hopes, and their desires — and that’s the formula.”
As Deion has navigated the changes to his team and coaching staff, he’s also had to watch out for what his players are consuming and how they’re taking care of their bodies.

“They don’t know what they’re doing. They’re just taking something that somebody gave them,” he says of other teams, before noting that California Almonds “keep me looking good.”
He adds, “You know they’re healthy. If you do your homework and Google that, you know they’re tremendously healthy. I recovered tremendously well. I’m still in my prime, and they keep me right where I need to be.”
And when it comes to his team overall, Deion is positive about the outlook. “We look good,” he says. “We, as in the whole staff, the team and everything — just having healthy snacks around, healthy options around is tremendous for our young men.”
