“From the investigation, this case is believed to be a murder / suicide,” the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Officesaidin their statement on Monday.
Sheriff KP Gibson tells PEOPLE it’s believed Robertson was the shooter, but he could not comment on any apparent motive behind the killings.
The couple were on their way to Mamou, police said, and their bodies were found about 7 p.m. in the evening. Mamou High School, where Ardoin was a student, was hosting its homecoming that evening, per the school’s Facebookpage. Gibson tells PEOPLE that given the route of their trip, it is believed the couple were possibly headed to homecoming festivities.

In a tribute posted online, Mamou High School said the community is mourning “one of our own.”

Robertson’s Facebook page shows he was a local DJ. In an Instagrampostfrom about two months ago, Robertson shared a photo of him and Ardoin with the caption: “Me & You Against The World.”
