Jennifer LopezandBen Affleckworked hard toblend their familiesbefore their divorce.

“What I hope to cultivate with our family is that his kids have a new ally in me and my kids have a new ally in him,” Lopez toldVoguein November 2022. “Someone who really loves and cares about them but can have a different perspective, and help me see things that I can’t see with my kids because I’m so emotionally tied up.”

Lopez is amother to twins, Emme and Max, with her ex-husbandMarc Anthony, while Affleck shareschildren Violet, Seraphina and Samuelwith his ex-wifeJennifer Garner.

Two years after tying the knot, Lopezfiled for divorcefrom Affleck in August 2024.

“She tried really hard to make things work, and is heartbroken,” a source told PEOPLE. “The kids are a top priority, as they always have been.”

Affleck and Lopez began bonding with each other’s children early in their relationship

Lopez and Affleck rekindled their relationship in April 2021 after nearly two decades apart, and soon began spending time with each other’s kids. A source told PEOPLE in June 2021 that Affleck was “slowly getting to know” the twins as Lopez moved to Los Angeles, where the actor lives.

Another source added that the family got dinner together in Malibu, where “Ben and [the] kids seemed comfortable together.”

“The kids kept chatting with Ben. Ben seemed great,” the source said. “He was smiling and laughing.”

A month later, Affleck and Lopezspent the Fourth of July weekendin the Hamptons with Emme and Max.

“Ben is bonding with Jennifer’s kids,” a source told PEOPLE at the time.

They’ve been on public family outings

In the summer of 2021, Affleck and Lopez enjoyed numerous days out with their blended family, taking their kids to amusement parks and performances.

In July, the coupleenjoyed a day out at Universal CityWalkwith Max, Emme and Samuel and in the following weeks, Affleckreturned to the parkwith Seraphina, Emme and Samuel.

“It’s just a natural step that they all spend time together with the kids,” a source told PEOPLE at the time.

“They are not trying to rush anything, but they want all the kids to get to know each other,” the insider added. “They are making the last few days of summer as fun as they can. Soon it’s back to school and work.”

“We weren’t only marrying one another; we were marrying these children into a new family,” Lopez wrote in her newsletter, On The JLo, over a month later. “They were the only people we asked to stand up for us in our wedding party. To our great honor and joy, each one did.”

Affleck and Lopez both have supportive co-parenting relationships with their exes

Lopez hasspoken highly of Garner, who is the mother of all three of Affleck’s children. She toldVoguein November 2022 that Garner is “an amazing co-parent, and they work really well together.”

Affleck has previously spoken about his relationship with Garner, tellingTODAY.comin November 2017 that the two have been on “the same page.”

“If you recognize that you both have the best interest of the kids at heart, it’s quite a special connection,” he said. “We’re the only two people in the world who care this much about these three kids.”

That same year, Lopez told hostKelly RipaonLive with Kellythat she and Anthony alsoprioritized their kids' well-beingabove all else.

“We share something very special in the kids, and we know that," she said. “We’re there for them, and that’s the main thing.”

Five years later, Lopez opened up toVoguethat moving her children from Miami to Beverly Hills was a struggle as they had “so many feelings” about living on the West Coast while their father continued to reside on the East.

“They’re teens,” Lopez said. “But it’s going really well so far.”

They celebrated Christmas together as a family

The first Christmas after Lopez and Affleck tied the knot, the familyspent the holiday together, creating new traditions.

“We have blended families, doubled the people, doubled the fun, doubled the love, doubled the presents and tripled the chaos!!” Lopez wrote in her newsletter of her celebrations.

She added that the crew revisited a tradition they held before the COVID-19 pandemic now that they could reunite with their families.

“For the past 8 years we’ve been doing a Christmas Edition Taco Tuesday, where we get together and dress up and sing Christmas carols. During the pandemic that went to the wayside, so this was the first time in a long time we were able to get together with people that we haven’t seen in forever,” Lopez wrote.

Lopez said Affleck stepped up as a father figure for her kids

In May 2023, Lopez opened up toHoda KotbonTODAYabout the role Affleck had taken on as anattentive stepfatherto her children.

“Well, he’s a wonderful, wonderful father,” she said. “And a father figure to [Max and Emme] as well, because he has his own three beautiful children, and then there’s us.”

“He’s fantastic. He really steps up to the challenge of what that is and what that means,” she continued. “And they love him. They love him. And they appreciate him, and so do I.”

Lopez and Affleck prioritized their kids amid their marital strain

Though Lopez and Affleck began experiencing difficulties in their marriage in early 2024, they continued to prioritize their five kids.

In May 2024, a source told PEOPLE that the couple “still want to put the kids first,” and that they “have always been very family-oriented.”

Lopez eventuallyfiled for divorcefrom Affleck on Aug. 20, 2024. They were married for two years.
