Kerry Washingtonknows how to make a statement on the red carpet.

The Emmy winner looked positively regal in a white design, which featured beaded and bejeweled cups and straps, a demure center cutout and an elegant floor-length stole wrapped around her elbows. Jewelry selections from Anabela Chan added another element of bling to the minimalist look.

Her hair was worn in a sleek down style and her glam soft and ethereal.

Washington was recently present at theDemocratic National Conventionin Chicago in August, where shetook the stage with Vice President Kamala Harris’ grandnieces, Amara, 8, and Leela, 6.

While discussing the experience with PEOPLE at the 7th Annual Black Love Summit in Los Angeles on Saturday, Oct. 12,Washington shared that the children were “so sweet.”

“Those girls, they were great because they wanted to practice a hundred times. So backstage up until the moment we walked out, we were rehearsing again and again and again,” she said.

“I thought they were wonderful and I think in many ways helped me to not be nervous. I was so focused on being present for them that I didn’t have time to think about that insanely big crowd,” continued Washington.

The actress — who shares daughterIsabelle, 10, and sonCaleb Kelechi, 8, with husbandNnamdi Asomughaand is also alsostepmom to Asomugha’s teenage daughterfrom a previous relationship — recently spoke to PEOPLE abouttheir decision to keep their relationship and their family out of the spotlight.

Washington shared in June that the wanted to give their kids “that same opportunity to define a life for themselves and to enter the public space in their own way.”

“They’re not, like, locked in a dungeon. They do, you know, come to set, we go places, we do things. We do feel like we want to give them agency to engage in a public life in the way they want to, because this is what we do,” she continued.

“We’ve chosen to be athletes and artists, and that’s our choice,” said Washington. “But we want to let them be kids.”
