As tributes pour in for the singer — who, along withHarry Styles,Zayn Malik,Niall HoranandLouis Tomlinson, rose to fame after joining together on the U.K.’sX Factorin 2010 — many Directioners have united on social media with nods to favorite songs, moments and lyrics that are bringing them comfort in a time of tragedy.

Payne died on Oct. 16 after falling from the third floor of the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. As fans andhis bandmates mourn him, a moving letter he’d written to his 10-year-old self resurfaced online,in which he reminded himselfnot to give up on his dreams of singing, even in earlier days when he felt like it.

Here, revisit other fond memories of the late singer from his 1D days.

The Red Nose Day music video

At the onset of the clip the group stated the funds they would’ve budgeted for the video were donated to Comic Relief, a non-profit that raises money to help children and families suffering from poverty all over the world.

Even years after 1D’s disbandment in 2016, various clips of the guys’ silly dance moves and funny moments have been reshared, making it one of the more iconic moments in the fandom.

Liam Payne’s fear of spoons

Probably one of the wackiest moments in the 1D fandom was chatter around Payne’s supposed fear of spoons. In a tweet from February 2011, Payne publicly confessed to this “phobia,” writing, “I have aphobia of spoonsI haven’t used one in about 10 years.”

It became a topic of conversation among the group in interviews for years after, with Payne remaining steadfast in his opinion, even going as far as to eat soup with a fork on video to further prove his point.

“See I’m not so much scared of spoons, I’ll hold one,” he said in a video withCapitalFMin 2015. “But I don’t like eating with them, if they’re not my spoons, if that makes sense.”

“It’s a bit weird. When I was a kid I was a big naughty at school and when you were naughty they made you do the washing up," he continued. “I had to wash all these nasty spoons and then it’s just stuck with me after. I don’t know what people are doing with their spoons. I don’t want to know!”

Louis Tomlinson’s love of women who like carrots

Though all of the band members seemed incapable of being anything but goofy during these shoots, Tomlinson was probably the biggest offender of the bunch; in various clips, he ripped off his shirt Superman-style, came out with a trash can lid on his head and proudly proclaimed, “I like girls who eat carrots.”

“In my first video diary, I explained my love for women who have a taste in carrots,” he stated, sitting in the center of the group. “Since then I have received plenty of carrots. Now I also have a keenest interest in women who like Lamborghinis.”

The lyric changes in ‘Gotta Be You’

There are plenty of artists who have altered the lyrics to their songs when performed onstage (see: Taylor Swift’s“Karma is the guy on the Chiefs”), but One Direction probably had some of the most hilarious live ad-libs.

Some of the most memorable ones from their hit “Gotta Be You” include “wrong-size shoe,” “big brown poo” and “I love chicken soup.”
