Liam Payne’s family is “heartbroken” following the singer’s sudden death at age 31.
In a statement to multiple outlets including theBBCandPA Media, the formerOne Directionmember’s family addressed their loss, saying “Liam will forever live in our hearts and we’ll remember him for his kind, funny and brave soul.”
“We are supporting each other the best we can as a family and ask for privacy and space at this awful time,” they continued, per the BBC.
Payne waspronounced deadafter falling multiple stories at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Wednesday, Oct. 16, Policía Federal Argentina confirmed to PEOPLE.
An investigation is currently underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding Payne’s sudden death, local police told PEOPLE, adding that an autopsy will be conducted.
In a statement translated from Spanish, Alberto Crescenti (the head of Buenos Aires' SAME public emergency medical services system) told local outletTNthat the singer fell into the hotel’s internal courtyard.
