Man Accused of Murdering Newlywed Nurse Was 'Deliberately Cruel' to Her in Final Moments: Prosecutors

KOINreportedthat prosecutors in the murder case of Melissa Jubane argued in court filings this week that the suspect Bryce Schubert, 27, is being regarded as a threat to the safety of the public and that “future efforts to rehabilitate” him “will not be successful.”

The prosecutors reportedly said in the filings that “the degree of harm or loss attributed to the current crime of conviction was significantly greater than typical for such an offense,” according to the outlet.

Schubert lived in the same apartment complex as Jubane, 32, at the time of her death, according to localKHON. The outlet reported that Jubane had just returned home from Hawaii, where she married her boyfriend of 10 years the week before her disappearance.

Local KATUreportedthat Schubert has been charged with second-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, and first-degree abuse of a corpse, though details about the kidnapping and murder have not been released.

The outlet also reported that Schubert was employed as a nurse at Providence Portland Medical Center from 2022 until 2023, but not at the same hospital where Jubane worked. It’s unclear how Schubert and Jubane knew each other, according to KOIN, KHON, and KATU.“She is very humble, she’s very pretty, she’s smart, she’s very intelligent, and very respectful,” Jubane’s mother-in-law told KHON last month. “She’s like a daughter to me, she’s very close to me.”

Jubane’s mother-in-law told the outlet that her son met his wife when she was visiting Hawaii 10 years ago on vacation and that she routinely traveled back to visit him. KOIN reported that Jubane’s husband is an active member of the U.S. Navy, and he reported for duty in Washington while his wife returned to Oregon following their marriage in late August.

“Melissa was not only a loving wife, daughter, sister, friend, and community member, but also a dedicated nurse who cared deeply for her patients and work-family,” the fundraiser read. “She touched countless lives with her kindness, compassion, and selflessness.”
