She may have played some questionable mother figures on-screen, but in real life,Marcia Gay Hardenis a devoted mom to her three children, Eulala, Hudson and Julitta.

TheMystic Riveractress welcomed all three of her kids with her ex-husband Thaddaeus Scheel. The former couple wed in 1996, and Eulala was born just a few years later, in 1998. In 2004, they welcomed twins Hudson and Julitta. After nearly 15 years of marriage, the Oscar winner filed for divorce in 2012.

Harden admitted onPEOPLE Nowin 2019 to being a bit protective of her kids. “I’m not a super-restrictive type of parent,” the actress said. “I want them to be freeto make their own mistakes. But I do want to guide their mistakes a little bit.”

During a 2023 telethon to raise money to fight against anti-LGBTQ legislation, Harden opened up abouther children’s identities and her pride for them.

“My children are all queer,” the actress said. “My eldest child is non-binary. My son is gay. My youngest is fluid. And you know, they are my kids, and they teach me every day.”

In February 2024, Harden told PEOPLE that she tries to strike a balance with her parenting.

“You would have to ask them how I am as a parent. Each one will say something different. In the day, they would’ve said ‘strict.’ They would all say ‘hands-on,’ and they would not be wrong,” she said. “I want to be involved in their life."

Harden’s eldest child, Eulala Grace, was born on Sept. 23, 1998, and has stayed mostly out of the spotlight apart from attending occasional public outings.

While Eulala keeps a low-key profile, the eldest child of Harden did have a brief stint on-screen as a kid, appearing inPollockin 2000 alongside Harden as well asWhip ItandWorkaholics.

In 2020, Harden shared withPEOPLE Nowthat Eulala graduated from Bennington College, a liberal arts college in Vermont. It’s unclear exactly what Eulala studied, but the actresscongratulated her child on Instagramfor continuing to work in sculptures, ceramics and film even during the pandemic. However, Harden said that Eulala was “devastated” about not having a graduation.

“It’s less about the walk across the stageand really more about when you graduate as an art student, you have a showing,” she toldPEOPLE Now.“And you show what you’re doing. Then you get to confab with people and museums.”

To combat that disappointment, Harden said Eulala brought seven of her fellow students to the family home in the Catskills and finished their final year of school there together.

“They made an art commune,” she said. “It was so cool … They’ve got an edge to them. They’ve got street cred to them, this graduating class, because they’ve gone through something we could have never even imagined.”

On April 22, 2004, Harden gave birth to twins Hudson Harden and Julitta Dee in New York. The actresssaid in a 2020 interviewonThe Kelly Clarkson Showthat her son came out as gay in the seventh grade.

“I just thought it was the bravest thing ever,” Harden told Clarkson via Zoom.

Like his older sibling, Hudson usually keeps to himself but he did have a brief beauty vlogging moment in 2018 when heposted a YouTube videogiving his mom a red carpet-ready makeover.

According tohis Instagram bio, Hudson graduated from the Interlochen Center for the Arts in 2022. He started attending the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland — a school of dance, drama, music, production and film — in Glasgow soon after graduation.

To honor Hudson’s move to the United Kingdom, Hardenshared a congratulatory postfor her son on Instagram in 2022.

“I have spent 18 years listening to him sing, hum, chatter, sing, hum, chatter,” she wrote in a caption alongside a few photos of him and Eulala exploring Scotland. “It’s a bit quiet now!! … So proud of u Huddie. Miss ur noise. Miss YOU.”

Along with Hudson, Harden and Thaddaeus also welcomed daughter Julitta Dee on April 22, 2004. The actress described her younger daughter as “fluid” in 2023.

Out of Harden’s three kids, Julitta seems to be the most frequent participant in her mom’s red carpet events. The actressshared on her Instagramthat they attended the 2023 Tony Awards together and the pair alsowalked the red carpetat the 2022 Creative Arts Emmys together.

Julitta also seems to have received the acting gene. In 2018, she landed a recurring role in the dramaKidding, which starredJim Carreyand ran for two seasons. She also made a guest appearance onTrophy Wife, a comedy series that her mom had a recurring role on.

“What I’ve found about both of my twins is that they are actually far more capable of surrendering and accepting what they’re not in control of than me,” she said.

In February 2024, Harden told PEOPLE about her passion for mothering Julitta and her siblings.

“Having a child will literally be the greatest masterclass anybody will ever have … I’ve learned to accept each of them for the beauty that they are and dispel expectation,” she said. “I’ve learned that at the end of the day, it’s their life. I want them to be happy in it.”
