After Morris moved to Nashville, she connected with Hurd during a songwriting sessionin 2013, which eventually culminated in “Last Turn Home,” which Tim McGraw later recorded.
“We were both at different publishing companies, and our publishers' job is to fill our calendars up, so they just randomly put us together on a write one day,” Morris recalled of their first meeting.
“It was the start of a wonderful writing relationship,” she added. “It’s one of my favorite songs that we’ve ever been a part of. It’s just crazy to look back on that moment where we were both just songwriters, solely, and that song has held so much weight over the years. The meaning behind the song actually means more now to me and Ryan, in a weird way — years later, it sort of hit us what the song meant.”

Despite meeting in 2013, Morris and Hurd didn’t actuallystart dating until December 2015.
“We had been friends for only a couple of years, but there was always this writing chemistry in the room, and eventually, the timing of it was undeniable. We had such a foundation built off writing so many songs over the years that we were like, ‘Why are we avoiding this?'” Morris said about how their relationship evolved.

During an interview withEsquire, Morris opened up aboutthe trials she and Hurd went throughas newlyweds after she hit the road with Niall Horn during the summer of 2018.
“It was probably the hardest part of our relationship,” she recalled. “We went on our honeymoon, and then I immediately went on this gigantic tour opening for Niall Horan. It was more international touring than I had ever done. And I was gone more than I had ever been on any other tour.”
She added that it was a “tough summer” but therapy helped them get through their rough patch. “We have grown so much closer because we had to make some hard decisions and have some tough talks about what this future looks like and how we can make this better. I have always loved him, but I feel like I like him in ways I never knew I could before.”

In 2021, the couple releasedtheir first-ever duet “Chasing After You.” “Maren and I met writing songs and we’ve sung on each other’s records and written together, but this is the first time we’ve gotten to do an actual duet together,” Hurd said in a press release. “It feels like the timing is really perfect and it’s a full-circle moment to get to make music together in this way.”
In addition to performing the song together at the 2021 Academy of Country Music Awards, the song alsoearned them a Grammy nominationfor best country duo or group performance at the 2022 ceremony.
After having their first child at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Hurd realized his priorities had rapidly changed as he refocused his life on his growing family.
“Music stuff is not the most important thing anymore. The most important thing is obviously our home life and each other and our kid — and music is just our job sometimes,” he told PEOPLE.
He explained there’s a pecking order, and music isn’t first on the list. “It comes third, but it doesn’t mean it’s not important; it just means that the other stuff is always going to be first,” he said.
“Obviously, we’re going to have a very just a family-oriented party — we can’t do the full invitation thing,” she said, citing COVID-19 health concerns.
She explained the theme was to bePeter Rabbit,"‘cause that’s the book I read to him since he was a newborn."
Hurd shared a photo onInstagramof Morris reading a book to their son in his crib to celebrate her second Mother’s Day. He captioned it, “Happy Mother’s Day! Don’t know why I snapped this little gem but I’m happy I did. Hayes is lucky to have such an amazing mom, we love you MM!”

After welcoming their son in 2020, Morris experienced postpartum depression, which her husband initially diagnosed after he recognized changes in her behavior.
“Sometimes it’s just someone really close to you saying, ‘Are you OK?’ It’s so simple, but it kind of snaps you out of whatever fog you’re in that you think is normal, but isn’t,” she told PEOPLE. “I wouldn’t have made it through with my head this high without him.”
She said the depression eased when her son was about 6 months old.

Morris must also pay Hurd $2,100 a month in child support.
During an interview with PEOPLE, Morris admitted that performing Hurd-inspired songs, such as “Background Music” and “Chasing After You,” is “tough” at times.
“There’s obviously a space to exist for songs that you wrote about a love of your life,” she said. “I don’t want to say I go into autopilot for songs like that, to not feel the pain, but it is what it is. Those are songs that are meaningful and are meaningful to people, so that’s such a gift.”
