Matthew Broderick Reveals Why He Never Appeared onSex and the CityAlongside Wife Sarah Jessica Parker

Matthew Broderickis shedding light on why he never joined wifeSarah Jessica ParkeronSex and the City.

In a recent episode ofThis Life of MinewithJames Cordenon Sirius XM, Broderick, 62, talked about his acting career and his marriage to the iconicSex and the Cityactress. Reflecting on why he never appeared on the famed series, Broderick said he was asked, but it never worked out.

“Whenever there was a part that I could do, I couldn’t do it is really all that happened,” he explained. “But also sometimes, it was like, ‘Do you want to do two days as the premature ejaculator?’ And I’d be like, ‘You know, I don’t know, it’s just kind of embarrassing.’”

When Corden questioned if Parker, 59, would come home and present theFerris Bueller’s Day Offstar with various roles, Broderick laughed.

“No, they were very professional,” he said. “I wish that I had done it or or been in it.”

Broderick said he was mindful to let Parker, who played the leading role of Carrie Bradshaw inSATCfrom1998–2004 and later in its sequel films and revival series,keep the show for herself.

“That was her thing, and that would be stunting me or something, I don’t know,” he shared. “It just never work worked out. I love that show and I would have been delighted to be in it, but it just never lined up right.”

In a 1996 interview with theNew York Times,Parker remembered how Broderick asked her out through a voicemail. “He left a very charming, very self-effacing message on the machine,” she said. “You know, ‘Hi, it’s Matthew Broderick.’ You had to use your last name.”

Also in 1996, the two appeared in a Broadway show together:How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.Before the premiere, Parker gushed about her then-boyfriend.

“He’s probably the funniest fellow I’ve met in my whole life,” she said. “He’s so bright, so handsome, I think he’s the most handsome man I’ve seen in my life. And he inspires me. I’m mad for him, totally.”

When asked about thesecret to their lasting relationshipin November 2020, Broderick said, “I don’t know the secret at all, but I, you know, I’m very grateful and I love her. It’s amazing. I mean, I can’t believe that it’s been that long. It doesn’t feel like it.”

Parker and Broderick also share three children together — son James, born in 2002, and twin daughtersMarion and Tabitha, born in 2009.

In 2011, Parker opened up about the challenges of marriage after two decades together.

“We’ve been together for 20 years and you have good days, you have decent days, and you have bad days. That’s a marriage,” she said. “That’s a relationship. That’s a friendship, even — relationships outside the marriage run the same course.”

Parker added, “If you’re in it for the long haul and you want meaningful relationships, you are going to go through lots of different periods.”
