Netflix Drops Release Date for Prince Harry'sPOLODocuseries

Prince Harry’s upcoming Netflix showPOLOis galloping into queues this December, and fans can officially mark the premiere date down.

The five-episode docuseries follows polo players “on and off the field as they compete in the high-stakes U.S. Open Polo Championship in Wellington, Florida,” Netflix said. “Through fierce rivalries and intense training, viewers will get an unprecedented glimpse into the dedication and skill required to compete at the sport’s highest level.”

The confirmation comes after Netflix announced in September that the Duke of Sussex’s documentary series about the equestrian sport would be calledPOLOand debut in December.

“POLO is a new documentary series that follows elite global players and offers an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the fast-paced world of the sport,” Netflix said onXon Sept. 9. “From Archewell Productions and Boardwalk Pictures. Premiering this December.”

The announcement featured four photos, including a picture of three polo players on their horses before a pitch and two athletes wielding mallets as they went after the ball.

Polo is famously known as “the sport of kings,” and the Duke of Sussex, 40, has played for decades. The polo show was first reported in April, when it emerged that Harry and Meghan hadtwo new nonfiction seriesin the “early stages” of production at Netflix from their Archewell Productions company.Deadlinewas first to report the news, and said Meghan’s still publicly unnamed show will see her “celebrate the joys of cooking, gardening, entertaining and friendship.”

The programs are part of the ongoing multi-year deal that Prince Harry and Meghan, 43, signed with the streaming platform in 2020.

Deadlinesaid the polo program (then untitled!) would “follow the world of professional polo” and the dedication necessary to succeed in the sport. The outlet said the show was shot primarily at the U.S. Open Polo Championship in Wellington, Florida at The USPA National Polo Center.

Cameras rolledduring the couple’s appearance at the Royal Salute Polo Challenge benefitting his charity Senteable in Wellington, Florida, on April 12, which came the day after the news about the two nonfiction Netflix projects dropped.

“Prince Harry and I have talked about polo for years. The production company is incredible, and Netflix has a huge platform to reach the biggest hearts in the world. I am happy to be involved and think this is a great opportunity for the sport,” Prince Harry’s friend and fellow polo playerIgnacio “Nacho” Figuerasexclusively told PEOPLE then about the polo program.

The Duke of Sussex was spotted behind the camera the following day at the National Polo Center, out with a film crew to capture footage for the sporty show.

In October, Figueras told PEOPLE that he and Prince Harry were “very excited” about thePOLOdocuseries. The polo star, 47, backs Sentebale as an ambassador and has traveled around the world to play in the Sentebale Polo Cup, its flagship fundraiser.

“Look, to me, it’s an honor to do anything with him. He’s a dear friend,” Figueras told PEOPLE at the  Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic in Los Angeles on Oct. 5.

“This is more his project than it is mine. It’s an honor to know that I was able to help,” he said of the series. “And the show is not about me. It’s not about him … So we’ve been working very hard on it, and we’re very excited about the outcome.”

In November 2023, Meghanalluded to the anticipationshe felt around the creative projects she and her husband had in the works during a solo red carpet appearance atVariety’s Power of Women event in Los Angeles.

“You have now come into Hollywood into a producorial capacity. As you’re looking to make these new projects, what is the thing that is driving the work that you’re going to put out into the business?”Varietywriter Angelique Jackson asked.

“Things that make people feel, I was going to say good, but it’s more than that,” Meghan replied. “Things that make peoplefeelsomething. And feel a sense of community. We have so many exciting things on the slate.”

“I can’t wait until we can announce them. Just really proud of what we’re creating, my husband is loving it too,” she added, referring to Prince Harry.

“Just really fun,” Meghan said.
