Amy Adamsis putting motherhood in a whole new light.
As a character named only Mother, Adams admits that staying at home with her young son is “complicated” before embarking on an increasingly tense stream of consciousness.
“I would love to feel content. But instead I feel like I’m just stuck inside of a prison of my own creation where I torment myself until I’m left binge-eating Fig Newtons at midnight to keep from crying," she says.

Her tirade — covering topics including “societal norms and gender expectations and just plain old biology” — doesn’t stop there, ending with the fear that she’s “never going to be smart or happy or thin ever again."
But a twist at the end of the scene indicates that this character has only fantasized delivering such a monologue.
Instead, her answer about being a stay-at-home parent is much more restrained: “Yeah, I do, I love it. I love being a mom.”

Per a synopsis, she “pauses her career to be a stay-at-home mom, but soon her new domesticity takes a surreal turn.”
“Though I enjoy the fun and the festivity of getting dolled up, I kind of like being in my natural state, stepping into the role of a mom who sort of just went off the rails,” Adamstold PEOPLEatVariety’s Power of Women event Oct. 25.
“Women go through so many transformative times, which aren’t talked about enough,” added themother of one. “So for me, that was really important, to bring the voice of those times of transformation that somehow feel taboo to discuss.”
Adams hasn’t been seen on the big screen since 2022’sDisenchanted, the sequel to her 2007 Disney breakoutEnchanted. Among her other upcoming projects is costarring with Jenna Ortega in director Taika Waititi’sKlara and the Sun.
