Reese WitherspoonandJim Tothhavegone their separate waysafter 12 years of marriage.

The actress and the talent agent released a joint statement in March 2023, announcing their “difficult decision to divorce.” A source told PEOPLE of the breakup, “They really are the best of friends and this is such an amicable decision. They are so committed to co-parenting together. They are invested in their whole family and making this as smooth as possible for everyone.”

In August 2023, the couplesettled their divorceand agreed to a parenting plan for their son.

Witherspoon and Toth first sparked dating rumors in February 2010 after they werespotted having dinner togetherin Santa Monica. By that December, they wereengaged.

The couple married in March 2011 during alaid-back weddingon Witherspoon’s ranch in Ojai, Calif. Toth quickly bonded with Witherspoon’s two children,DeaconandAva Phillippe, whom she shares with actorRyan Phillippe, and the couple welcomed a son of their own, Tennessee James, in September 2012.

In a 2012 interview withElle, the Oscar winner dished about her first meeting with Toth, whom she met at a friend’s house shortly after her split fromJake Gyllenhaal. “It happened out of the blue,” she recalled. “This really drunk guy was hitting on me, making such an idiot of himself, yelling at me. He was, like, [slurring, scowling, pointing finger in her face] ‘You don’t know me.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, I know. Idon’tknow you!’ "

She continued, “Jim came over and said, ‘Please excuse my friend. He’s just broken up with someone.’ Jim was a really good friend, pulling him out of that situation. That’s just kind of who he is, a really good person.”

February 2010: Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth go on a dinner date

The budding couple sparked romance rumors during adinner dateat Santa Monica eatery Locanda Portofino, with a fellow diner telling PEOPLE the pair spent nearly two hours at the Italian hotspot and were “very flirtatious throughout dinner.” The source added, “They were having a lot of fun, totally getting along and laughing and talking the whole dinner. Reese seemed very happy. She was smiling all dinner. The mood was upbeat and really good.”

PEOPLEexclusively reported that theLegally Blondestar celebrated her birthday with close pals and brought Toth along. The Pennsylvania native got the seal of approval from Witherspoon’s friends, prompting her to introduce him to her children. The foursome also spent time together over Easter weekend.

She called herself “very lucky” to find her perfect fit in Toth. “Now I feel a great sense of relief and an incredible amount of support from my husband. … Somebody close to me once said, ‘Oh, no man will ever accept your children.’ And I just thought it was the most horrifying thing someone has ever said to me in my entire life. I was determined to find somebody who would make that not true. And I got lucky. I did. I got very lucky, and he’s wonderful. And so wonderful with the children. I’m very blessed.”

You read more books than anybody I know. You should just buy some of them and turn them into films.” That same year, the multi-talented star formed her Hello Sunshine production company, whichshe sold to Blackstone Group Inc. in August 2021 for $900 million.

Witherspoon shared a family selfieon Instagramin honor of her 44th birthday. March 24, 2023: Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth announce their divorce

Just days before their 12-year wedding anniversary, Witherspoon and Tothannounced they were ending their marriage.

“We have some personal news to share… It is with a great deal of care and consideration that we have made the difficult decision to divorce,” they wrote in a joint statement on Instagram. “We have enjoyed so many wonderful years together and are moving forward with deep love, kindness and mutual respect for everything we have created together.”

“Our biggest priority is our son and our entire family as we navigate this next chapter,” they added. “These matters are never easy and are extremely personal. We truly appreciate everyone’s respect for our family’s privacy at this time.”

March 27, 2023: Source says Reese Witherspoon is “disappointed and upset” about divorce from Jim Toth

A source told PEOPLE that Witherspoon “never saw herself getting another divorce” but that she and Toth are “very different people.” The insider described theLegally Blondestar as “headstrong and focused,” while they called Toth “more laidback.”

The source added: “Reese is obviouslydisappointed and upset. They love Tennessee and this is their focus. They will continue to co-parent amicably. There is no drama.”

April 1, 2023: Reese Witherspoon officially files for divorce from Jim Toth

Additionally, Witherspoon asked the court to designate her and the CAA agent as joint custodians of their son, Tennessee.

Shortly after the couple announced their divorce, a source told PEOPLE that Witherspoon and Toth had been “spending less time together” due to the actress' busy work schedule.

“They didn’t come to the decision to divorce easily and hastily. It took a long time,” the insider added. “This is so hard for both of them. There’s no drama. These decisions are so difficult when there is so much friendship and love there.”

A second source told PEOPLE that Witherspoon isleaning on her “large group of close friends"during this difficult time.

She has a lot of support,” the insider said. “She is positive about her future.”

April 17, 2023: Source says Reese Witherspoon has “no regrets” regarding divorce from Jim Toth

According to a source, Witherspoon is “doing much better” after announcing her divorce from Toth nearly a month ago.

“The divorce decision was not an easy one for her. It was rough to reach the decision and to announce it,” the insider told PEOPLE. “She has no regretsand is just focused on her kids and work.”

In her cover story forHarper’s BAZAAR, Witherspoon addressed how she’s feeling amid her divorce from Toth.

July 18, 2023: Jim Toth vacations with new girlfriend

Four months after Toth and Witherspoon announced their divorce, the former CAA agent wasspotted with a new flame.

August 2, 2023: Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth reach a divorce settlement

Witherspoon and Tothsettled their divorcein the Circuit Court of Davidson County, Tennessee. The couple signed a marital dissolution agreement and agreed to a parenting plan for their son.

September 5, 2024: Source says Reese Witherspoon is dating financier Oliver Haarmann

A year after settling her divorce from Toth, Witherspoon has been seenout and about in New York Citywith private equity financier Oliver Haarmann on several occasions. Sources confirmed to PEOPLE that the couple are dating.

“It’s just casual,” one insider added.
