It tookStevie Nicksa long time to enter the voting booth.

In anew interview withMSNBC, the 76-year-oldFleetwood Macmusician spoke about how she didn’t vote in a U.S. election until about six years ago and wishes she got involved in politics earlier.

“I never voted until I was 70, but I regret that,” said Nicks. “I’ve told everybody that onstage for the last two years. I regret that, and I don’t have very many regrets.”

Looking back, she recalled coming up with “so many reasons” not to vote. “You can say, ‘Oh, I didn’t have time. I was this and that.’ In the long run, you didn’t have an hour? You didn’t have an hour of your time that you could have gone and voted,” added the “Landslide” performer.

This time around, Nicks — who endorsedKamala Harrisfor president in a recentRolling Stoneinterview — is not only participating in the election but particularly passionate about an issue, as she toldMSNBC, “We have to find a way tobring back Roe v. Wade.”

She also believes musicians have a unique way they can get involved. “In the end of the ‘50s and ‘60s and going into the 70s, everyone was writing protest songs.Bob Dylan,Joan Baez,Joni Mitchell,Stephen Stills— it was lots and lots and lots,” she said. “I would say to all my musical poets that write songs to write some songs about what’s happening, like I did.”

Elsewhere in theMSNBCinterview, she spoke about the song’s concept. “Whoever wins [the election], the lighthouse needs to keep shining its light and also keep those ships from crashing into the rocks,” said the Grammy winner. “That’s my idea of the lighthouse being a protector, protecting all those boats and ships that are coming in.”

Shortly afterTaylor Swift endorsed Harris, 60, in September, Nicksposted to Instagramwith a call to action regarding the election. “As my friend@taylorswiftso eloquently stated, now is the time to research and choose the candidate that speaks to you and your beliefs,” she said at the time.

She added, “Only 54 days left until the election. Make sure you are registered to vote! Your vote in this election may be one of the most important things you ever do.”
