Whether you deal with dry skin all year long or just seasonally (hello, flaky winter skin), sometimes you need your daily face moisturizer to put in a little extra work to give you a soft complexion. The More You KnowMoisturizing ingredients tend to fall into one of three categories: humectants, which attract moisture and hold it in the skin; emollients, which soften and smooth the surface of the skin and help repair the skin barrier; and occlusives, which sit on top of the skin to prevent water from evaporating, explainsDr. Brian Hibler, a board-certified dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York City.We started with 35 formulas and used moisture-reading devices to quantify our testers' moisture levels before and after using each product, evaluating important attributes such as absorption, feel, appearance, and the overall value of the product along the way. Across the board, our favorite moisturizers absorbed into the skin nicely, left our faces feeling hydrated, and didn’t require a ton of product to get the job done.Keep reading to discover the best face moisturizers for dry skin that PEOPLE tested. Our Top PicksBest Overall:SALEEltaMD AM Therapy Face Moisturizer at Amazon$47$38Jump to ReviewBest Overall, Less Expensive:Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer at Amazon$13Jump to ReviewBest Budget:Cetaphil Daily Hydrating Lotion at Amazon$15Jump to ReviewBest Drugstore:CeraVe Moisturizing Cream at Amazon$20Jump to ReviewBest for Sensitive Skin:La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer at Amazon$24Jump to ReviewBest for Redness:Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré at Amazon$17Jump to ReviewBest Lightweight:Bubble Slam Dunk Hydrating Moisturizer at Amazon$17Jump to ReviewBest Smoothing:Versed Skin Soak Rich Moisture CreamJump to ReviewBest for Mature Skin:Dr. Barbara Sturm Face Cream Rich at Amazon$240Jump to ReviewBest for Mature Skin, Less Expensive:Shani Darden Hydration Peptide Cream at Amazon$60Jump to Review

This formula easily checks that box, containing all three — hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and occlusive dimethicone — which trap water, strengthen the skin barrier, and seal everything in.Given that formulation, it’s not surprising that this moisturizer nabbed the top spot on our list. Even though it was hard to pump the lotion out of the bottle at first, that wasn’t a dealbreaker. We gave it a perfect five out of five when it came to how it made our skin look and feel, with one tester noting that her face felt hydrated and refreshed, and that the moisturizer blended easily into skin and absorbed within five minutes. (In related news, we also found it had an innately pleasant cooling sensation.) It wasn’t just her imagination: Her moisture readings jumped from 17.6 to 31.6 percent before using the product to 25.5 to 41.8 percent after using.Key Ingredients:Niacinamide, dimethicone, hyaluronic acid |Size:1.7 fl. oz. |Fragrance-Free:YesPHOTO: People / Tamara StaplesPHOTO: People / Tamara StaplesPHOTO: PEOPLE / Tamara Staples

With an almost perfect score across the board (4.6 out of 5), this moisturizer is lightweight and easy to apply. It’s extremely hydrating and left our tester’s skin moisturized and soft. We noticed an immediate change in our skin’s hydration, with our tester’s moisture levels jumping from 19 to 30 percent before using the product to 35 to 46 percent after use.We love that this moisturizer works within minutes and doesn’t leave skin looking or feeling oily. These are essential components of the skin barrier, or the outermost layer of the skin that helps to keep moisture in and irritants out. And to the point of irritants, this is also an extremely gentle formula; it’s free of fragrance, hypoallergenic, and allergy-tested…so if you’re looking for agood eczema cream, this product even touts the National Eczema Association’s Seal of Approval (a major boon since dry skin and eczema often go hand-in-hand).During testing, we found it to hydrate and soften the skin so much that our tester wanted to just slather it all around her body. That’s an option with this pick, as it can in fact be used head-to-toe. It scored high marks across the board, particularly when it came to value: We appreciated the large-sized tub that rings in at an affordable price. However, it’s important to note that tub packaging leaves the door open for bacterial growth from continually dipping your fingers into the formula. Because it’s a cream formula, though, this is expected (and not the only moisturizer on the list with this kind of packaging). The cream is packed with hydrating ingredients including hyaluronic acid, squalane, algae extract, and vitamin E, so it locks in moisture while fending off early aging.
Immediately we noticed that the consistency of this moisturizer was lightweight and comfortable. It felt very creamy and soothing on the skin. The product absorbed well without leaving behind any sticky residue, and it didn’t take long to soak into the skin.
It hydrated our tester’s skin extremely well and left her skin feeling “softer and plumper.” Her skin felt “refreshed and revived” after applying this moisturizer. She even noticed that her skin looked smoother, pores appeared smaller, and skin tone was more even.
Overall, we think the quality is incredible for the price — it’s $18 at Amazon for 1.5 oz. and we didn’t have any downsides to report for this one.

If you have dry skin, look for at least two of the following three types of ingredients when choosing a moisturizer:
When you have dry skin, what’snotin your moisturizer can be just as important as what’s in it. “Avoid moisturizers with fragrance," advises Dr. Hibler. “Although they smell nice, they serve no real purpose for protecting the skin and can lead to irritation or allergies.” Steering clear of formulas that contain alcohols and/or exfoliating ingredients is also a good idea. These can further dry out and irritate the skin, exacerbating the dryness you’re already dealing with, notes Dr. Zubritsky.
We researched and tested 35 facial moisturizers to see which ones were the best fit for dry skin. We brought these products into the PEOPLE Tested lab before using them in our everyday routines to fully see the effects of each product.
After long-term testing concluded, we rated each product against its testing attributes: feel/consistency, absorption, hydration, appearance, and overall value. The moisturizers for dry skin with the highest average ratings became our winners, thus earning a place on this PEOPLE Tested list. Our pick for Best Overall face moisturizer for dry skin is theEltaMD AM Therapy Face Moisturizer.
