In our testing, we noted that its spray nozzle distributed a fine mist evenly through both wet and dry hair without any stickiness or residue; it also left hair feeling soft, shiny, and smooth to the touch. In terms of heat protection, we found that this spray shielded all different hair types (including straight, wavy, and curly strands) from any damage while using a blow dryer, curling iron, and straightening iron. We also observed quicker drying times while using the spray, and that it tamped down frizziness without adding any weight to strands. Lastly, we found that this product’s scent was pleasant yet mild and didn’t linger after its initial application; however, those who want a truly unscented product might want to look elsewhere.Size:5 ounces |Benefits:Cuts down drying time, adds shine, heat protectant formula |Temperature Protection:Up to 450 degrees FPHOTO: People / Jessica JuliaoPHOTO: People / Jessica JuliaoPHOTO: People / Jessica JuliaoPHOTO: People / Jessica JuliaoPHOTO: People / Jessica JuliaoPHOTO: People / Jessica JuliaoPHOTO: People / Jessica JuliaoPHOTO: People / Jessica JuliaoPHOTO: People / Jessica JuliaoPHOTO: People / Kathleen TenefranciaPHOTO: People / Kathleen TenefranciaPHOTO: People / Kathleen TenefranciaPHOTO: People / Kathleen TenefranciaPHOTO: People / Kathleen TenefranciaPHOTO: People / Kathleen TenefranciaPHOTO: People / Kathleen TenefranciaPHOTO: People / Kathleen TenefranciaPHOTO: People / Kathleen TenefranciaPHOTO: People / Jessica JuliaoPHOTO: People / Jessica Juliao

We appreciated its lightweight, non-greasy feel once applied, how it absorbed quickly, didn’t leave any residue, and that it left several different hair types (straight, wavy, and curly) feeling soft, smooth, moisturized, and shiny. Its scent was also pleasant without being overpowering. In terms of drawbacks, we noted that its nozzle sprayed the product in more concentrated streams rather than a consistent fine mist, which made its application uneven and slightly difficult. Also, while certain of our testers felt that it was effective at protecting hair from high-heat styling tools, its performance wasn’t as consistent as other products on this list. For under $20, we found that this heat protectant is comparable to some of its more expensive counterparts and provides some of the same impressive benefits, including UV protection and overall hydration and nourishment. The heat protectant is also incredibly lightweight and goes undetectable once hair is dried, so you get that heat protection and antioxidant nourishment without it ever looking or feeling like you used the product.

AG Care Firewall Argan Shine & Flat Iron Spray: Although AG Care’s spray had several positive attributes — we ultimately left this product off our best-of list due to uneven performance in terms of heat protection. Also, we noted that it weighed down fine hair, in some cases, and that its packaging was unusually heavy.
L’Oréal Elvive Dream Lengths Heat Slayer Pre-Iron Spray Leave-In: In our testing, the L’Oréal’s spray’s performance was inconsistent (it worked better during flat-ironing than during blow-outs), and it felt tacky when used with higher-heat tools. We also noted stiffness in our hair in some cases.
Mielle Mango & Tulsi Nourishing Thermal Protectant Spray: We left Mielle off our best-of list because it left hair feeling greasy and weighed down (in certain cases), its spray nozzle delivers a concentrated mist, which made its application more difficult, and because its heat protection was inconsistent. (On at least one occasion, it led to hair smoking during high-heat styling.)
The purpose of heat protectant formulas is to provide effective heat protection. “Look for a spray that clearly states its ability to protect hair against high temperatures,” saysSharon Dorram, owner of Sharon Dorram Color at Sally Hershberger. “It should have a high heat protection rating, such as 450 degrees F, to protect your hair from the heat of various styling tools.”
In order to truly protect hair from heat damage, Brown says to look for a heat protectant spray with hydrating ingredients. This is especially important for those with natural textures and curly strands. “Naturally curly hair is the most fragile and susceptible to weakened hair strands when it comes to high heat,” Brown explains. “This typically means that the product has to be a humectant that provides the hair with a ton of extra moisture, slip, and reduces drag while styling.”
When looking for the best heat protectant spray for your strands,Sarah Potempa, celebrity hairstylist and co-founder ofThe Beachwaver Co., says it’s important to find one with flexibility. “This means that the product will be buildable, workable, and still soft to the touch after use,” she explains. Since heat protectant is simply there to protect the hair from heat without interfering with the hair’s overall texture, you want to ensure the product doesn’t leave behind a stiff and crunchy feeling. With this in mind, Potempa says to look at the formula’s ingredient list for polymers that are designed to give strands that luscious movement vs. a starchy finish.
With heat protectants, there’s no need to use so many hairstyling products since many formulas have multipurpose benefits. If you want to lower the number of products you use in your routine, Dorram says to look for formulas that do a bit more than just protect from high heat. “Some heat protectant sprays offer additional benefits; for example, some products may also provide detangling properties, frizz control, or added shine.”
For a heat protectant with frizz control, consider theBriogeo Blow Dry Perfection and Heat Protectant Cremefor its taming formula. If you want to add a little more shine to your strands, we love thedae Agave Dry Heat Protection & Hold Styling Mist, which leaves hair looking ultra-sleek.

To find the best heat protectants, we researched dozens of formulas and put them to work in our PEOPLE Tested lab and at home.
Once the testing period was complete, we compiled all of our notes and compared experiences to determine which formulas performed the best to bring you this list of the best heat protectant sprays.
Heat protectant sprays, creams, and serums are designed to protect hair from high heat, and if they have a high-quality formulation, they can certainly get the job done. “Heat protectants typically contain ingredients that help to coat the hair and create a shield against high temperatures,” says Dorram, noting that these ingredients include silicone derivatives, polymers, and other heat-resistant compounds. With that said, heat protectant sprays can’t eliminate the risks of heat styling entirely. “High heat can still potentially cause damage to the hair, especially if used excessively or at very high temperatures,” Dorram notes.
“When it comes to application, some products ask that you apply to wet hair, and some products are just as effective with dry application,” says Brown. No matter what the application process entails, she recommends always following the manufacturer’s instructions on the bottle for the best results. Some heat protectant formulas also allow for both wet and dry application, making them more versatile depending on your styling needs.
