When you think of people in bright red swimsuits with sun-kissed skin running in slow motion, one word comes to mind:Baywatch.
Originally airing from 1989 to 2001, the beachy drama followed a team of lifeguards in California (and eventually, Hawaii) through 11 seasons of unforgettable — and sometimes outlandish — plotlines, ranging from massive earthquakes and serial killers to encounters of the mermaid kind.
At the center wasDavid Hasselhoff, whose often shirtless time as the sand-and-surf sweetheart Mitch Buchannon continued to make him a pop culture icon. Fellow beach bombshellsCarmen ElectraandPamela Andersonalso found immense success after the show, becoming household names.
To celebrateBaywatch’s35th anniversary, which was on Sept. 22, 2024, let’s look at what the original cast has been up to since they first hit the beach in 1989.

As the protagonist ofBaywatchand its subsequent spinoffs, Hasselhoff played Mitch Buchannon, a veteran lifeguard who regularly imparted wisdom to his young colleagues.
Hasselhoff has continued to act sinceBaywatchconcluded, often parodying himself in cameo roles in films likeThe SpongeBob SquarePants Movie(2004),DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story(2004),Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2(2017),Our Ladies(2019) and on the CBS seriesYoung Sheldonin 2021. In 2022, Anderson’srelationship with ex-husbandTommy Leewas depicted on Hulu’sPam & Tommy, an eight-part miniseriesmade without her involvement or permission. She released her documentaryPamela, a love story(2023) on Netflix to tell her own story in her own words. The actress expanded on her memories of her very public past in her 2023 memoir,Love, Pamela.
Anderson was featured as a contestant on the 10th season ofDancing with the Stars, partnering with Damian Whitewood until they were eliminated after seven weeks. She made several more appearances on the franchise, including in season 15 of the all-star edition in 2012 and season 9 ofFrenchDancing with the Stars(Danse avec les stars).Shemade her Broadway debutin a 2022 production ofChicago, performing Bob Fosse’s dance moves as Roxie Hart.
Anderson is also involved in political activism, including PETA, AIDS awareness, anti-pornography and whale conservation.

InAfter Baywatch, Anderson opened up about the surprising moment she realized she’d become famous. “We went to London to promoteBaywatch, and photographers were falling down backward and down the stairs, and I looked behind me and was like, ‘Who are they shooting?’ And it literally dawns on you that it’s you,” she recalled.
Despite her growing popularity, Anderson’s newfound stardom caused troubles in her marriage to then-husband Lee.Baywatchco-creator Michael Berk revealed inAfter Baywatchthat theMötley Crüedrummer once “trashed” his wife’s trailer because he was so jealous about her doing a scene where she kisses costar David Chokachi.

Michael Newmanplayed Michael “Newmie” Newman, one of the more experienced lifeguards on theBaywatchteam. The actor, who shares his name with his onscreen counterpart, was the only real-life lifeguard on the show.
Newman was initially hired as a technical consultant for the show before transitioning to acting. He has also appeared in the filmsWelcome to Hollywood(1998) andEnemy Action(1999).
Newman was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2006. As he recounted to PEOPLE in 2023, the former firefighter said his family was the first to notice signs something was wrong when his movements became slower than usual. He learned of his illness after his doctor prescribed him medication meant to treat symptoms associated with the neurodegenerative disorder.
“Everything changes,” Newman said of living with the illness. “All those things that you thought you were going to do with your children and grandchildren, pictures we were going to take, all the plans I had… stopped.”
Reflecting on his life since closing the chapter on hisBaywatchlegacy — which spans 150 episodes — Newman told PEOPLE leading up toAfter Baywatch’s premiere: “I am cherishing the days that I get to be on this earth with family and friends. I’m taking life seriously. It’s not a run-through.”
“I hope this documentary sheds light on the heroism of the life-guarding profession and builds respect for the worldwide fraternity of men and women who consider it an honor to risk their lives each and every day to save others,” he added. “I also hope that the telling of my personal story brings awareness to the importance of finding a Parkinson’s cure.”

Paul is a certified health coach and political activist whose focus includes animal rights, LGBTQ+ rights and the environment.
“He’s one of my closest friends on the show, so it was a secret we kept,” Paul shared inAfter Baywatch. “It was so dangerous for a man to come out, especially when you’re a handsome leading man, because producers wouldn’t hire you as a hetero guy getting girls, and that was the character he was playing.”
“There are pictures of him and I in theNational Enquirerholding hands and kissing because he needed a beard,” she added. “We did a photo shoot of both of us naked that appeared on the cover of a British newspaper. We wanted to make sure he was protected.”

“I just took it because at that point we all did our fittings— the new cast,” Electra told PEOPLE at theAfter BaywatchLos Angeles premiere in August 2024. “We did our fittings, and the suits didn’t come through until the very end, so we were wearing everyone else’s suit that was tagged ‘Everyone’ would fit into. But I had no problem with it. I thought it was kind of cool. ‘Okay, it’s Yasmine [Bleeth]’s suit that’s going to fit.’ ”

As one of the longest-tenured actors onBaywatch,Jeremy Jackson— who played Mitch Buchannon’s young son, Hobie — became a teen idol offscreen.
In 2015, Jackson participated on the reality television seriesCelebrity Big Brother, finishing in 15th place. He was removed from the show after only four days for sexually harassing a female housemate, Chloe Goodman, theBBC reported.
Since serving four-and-a-half months in prison for an alleged stabbing in 2015,Jackson has been in recovery.
Speaking about his condition in June 2024, Jackson told PEOPLE: “I am in remission from the from the chronic, fatal and progressive disease I was once plagued with? Yes, thank God. Yes, I am.”
InAfter Baywatch, Jackson admitted to using crystal meth on the set of the show and recalled a particularly uncomfortable interaction he had with costar Hasselhoff mid-use.
“I remember David saying, ‘Are you smoking pot or something?’ And I was [thinking] like, ‘Jesus, they think I’m smoking pot?’ I could never tell them the truth. What would they think?” he said. “When you haven’t slept for five days, and you’ve been smoking crystal meth, having somebody look you in the eyes and say, ‘Dude, are you okay?’ is like the worst thing that can happen.”
From 2012 to 2014, Jackson was married to former model Loni Willison.
