We’re not complete without this cult classic!

A critical and financial success, the gothic film earned anOscarnomination for Best Makeup and Depp aGolden Globenod for best actor in a motion picture - comedy or musical in 1991. It also amassed a devoted fanbase that returns to it year after year, particularly duringHalloweenand the holiday season. (Who can forget that magical snow dance scene?)

Explaining his process for bringing the sensitive — albeit naive —titular character to life, Depp told former talk-show hostEllen DeGeneresin 2012 (viaEntertainment Weekly), “Scissorhands was a combination. The idea of a newborn seeing things for the first time.”

He continued, “And also, a dog that I’d had. This dog … with unconditional love, this sort of purity in my dog.”

From Depp’s continued work with the prolific director toWinona Ryder’s role on the smash Netflix hitStranger Things, here’s what the cast ofEdward Scissorhandsis up to now.

Edward Scissorhandskicked off his decades-long partnership with Burton — with whom he’s collaborated several times since inEd Wood(1994),Corpse Bride(2005),Charlie and the Chocolate Factory(2005) andSweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street(2007).

During an interview in Tara Wood’s untitled docuseries about Burton, Depp said that the filmmaker andEdward Scissorhandsscript “passed through everything, anything, solid and went to the very core of whatever I am. The writing was beautiful.The character was beautiful. What I suppose [attracted] me emotionally was that Edward was me. It’s exactly what I should be doing.”

Outside of his work with Burton, Depp landedWhat’s Eating Gilbert Grape(1993) andDonnie Brasco(1997) — and in 2003, he stepped into the role of Jack Sparrow for Disney’sPirates of the Caribbeanfranchise.

He also starred as Grindelwald in 2016’sFantastic Beasts and Where to Find Themand the 2018 sequelFantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. In 2023, he portrayed Louis XV in the period dramaJeanne de Barry. He’s also set to play Satan alongside stars likeAdam Driver,Jeff BridgesandJason Momoain Terry Gilliam’s upcoming film,The Carnival at the End of Days.

Depp sharestwo childrenwith his exVanessa Paradis: sonJackand daughter andIdolactressLily-Rose. He alsodated his formerEdward Scissorhandscostar, Ryder, from 1990 to 1993.

Alan Arkinhad been acting for years before playing Peg’s husband, Bill, in the 1990 film. After college, Arkin had a brief career in music before becoming an early member of Second City in Chicago. Later, he made his Broadway debut in 1961, appearing inFrom the Second City. Arkin had also ventured onto the screen around that time, appearing in films likeThe Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming— which earned the actor his first of four career Oscar nominations in 1967.

Arkin wasa father of threeand wed his third wife,Suzanne Newlander, in 1996. Hedied at the age of 89in 2023.

Kathy Baker’s first on-screen role came in 1983’sThe Right Stuff, and from there, the roles kept coming, includingA Killing Affair(1985),Street Smart(1987),Clean and Sober(1988) andDad(1989).

After landing the role of Joyce — a housewife who takes a liking to Edward — in the 1990 film, Baker led the cast ofPicket Fencesas Dr. Jill Brock from 1992 to 1996 and later appeared onBoston Publicfor two seasons.
