Step aside Avengers, a new super team is assembling in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel first teased the formation of the Thunderbolts in Disney+’s 2021 seriesThe Falcon and the Winter Soldierwith the introduction ofValentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), who begins recruiting members for the group.
From the full cast list to the release date, here’s everything to know about Marvel’sThunderbolts+.

During the D23 Expo in September 2022,the official cast list was unveiled, including Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.
While Louis-Dreyfus appeared in credits scenes and cameos over multiple Marvel films and series, it seems theVeepalum wanted to be more involved in the MCU universe. “I actually pitched it,” Louis-DreyfustoldVarietyin an interview published Jan. 17, 2023. “I told them I really, really want to fight. We’ll see if that happens. I haven’t seen the script yet.”
Additionally, the cast includesTop Gun: Maverickstar Lewis Pullman as Sentry. Geraldine Viswanathan in an undisclosed role and Harrison Ford as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross fromCaptain America: Brave New World,per Deadline.

The official title for the upcoming movie will beThunderbolts*, which has sparked many theories about what the asterisk could mean. When asked about the title at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024, Kevin Feige teased that all will be revealed when the movie is released.
Marvel released thefirst official trailerforThunderbolts*in September 2024.
The three-minute teaser follows Black Widow as she and her fellow supervillains are all “sent” to the same strange building and trapped behind massive cement doors.
“Everyone here has done bad things — shadow ops, robbing government labs, contract kills. Someone wants us gone,” she says to the group.
The supervillains are eventually introduced to Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, who has plans to harness the group’s abilities for government missions.

Filming for the project began in early 2024 in Atlanta, withPugh sharing a rare behind-the-scenesglimpse into the filming in March. Dressed in costume as Yelena Belova, the actress took fans around set, where the film’s director playfully said, “I don’t think you’re allowed to even be doing this.” Additionally filming reportedly took place in Utah and New York before wrapping in June 2024.

Thunderboltswill be released in theaters on May 2, 2025, and will mark the last film in Phase 5 of the MCU.
