University of Georgia Suspends Football Player Colbie Young After He's Charged with Assault of Unborn Child

The University of Georgia has suspended Colbie Young, one of its football team’s top wide receivers, after he was arrested Tuesday morning on allegations he assaulted his pregnant girlfriend and allegedly trying to “squeeze” her stomach during the attack.

Young was arrested after an ex-girlfriend claimed he assaulted her and her unborn child at his apartment late Monday night, around midnight. According to his arrest report, Young’s 20-year-old ex-girlfriend told officers she went to his apartment to discuss their relationship and found that he was on the phone with another woman.

Young reportedly grabbed the woman and “physically pulled her out of his room” before locking the door behind him, the woman told officers, according to the arrest report. The woman then began collecting her things and answered a phone call from a friend, which is when she alleges Young came out of his room and grabbed her from behind and began attacking her.

“She said that he picked her up and began to squeeze her torso and abdomen very hard,” the arrest report claims. “She said she felt like [Young] was trying to harm her."

An arresting officer noted that the woman had a bruise and marks near the top of her abdomen, though Young told the officer “it wasn’t from him,” according to the arrest report.

“Colbie Young was arrested on Monday night after he asked his ex-girlfriend to leave his apartment,” the player’s attorney Kim Stephens said in a statement to PEOPLE. “He did not make physical contact with her in any way that could ever be considered a crime.”

Young, a senior at Georgia, is still listed on the team’s roster though the school says he is suspended as his arrest plays out, according to ESPN.

After five games this season, the Binghamton, New York native was second on the team with two touchdown catches and had 11 receptions for 149 yards. He transferred to Georgia after two years at Miami.

“It’s unfortunate,” Smart said.
