Thanks to their “tenacity and intellectualism, Virgos are usually able to create order out of chaos no matter what,” Thomas says.

As we head into Virgo season — which runs from August 23 to September 22 — here’s everything to know about the earth sign’s compatibility with the rest of the zodiac.

What are the key traits of Virgo?

Virgo is the epitome of effortless elegance. They’re poised, responsible and always well put together.Earth signsare typically grounded, steadfast and pragmatic but as a mutable sign, Virgo is also extremely resourceful, adaptable and communicative.

Virgos are practical, meticulous and reliable, but when it comes to romance, they often seek out partners with opposite traits. Above all, Virgos are caretakers. “They need to feel needed,” Thomas explains. They pride themselves on being reliable, loyal and able to solve problems, so “they desire to be a rock for others.”

What signs are most compatible with Virgo?

Generally speaking, Virgos are most compatible with fellow earth signs (Taurus and Capricorn) and water signs (Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces), says Thomas.

When two signs share the same element, they have similar worldviews and underlying values, so earth signs tend to get along well with other earth signs. Virgos also do well with their opposite element: water.

Water signs are known for being sensitive, compassionate and nurturing. Unlike Virgos, however, they tend to lack a practical approach to the world. That mixture of mutual and contrary qualities creates a complementary pair who “can balance one another out,” Thomas explains.

Capricorn

Astrologically speaking,Capricornis Virgo’s “soulmate sign,” says Nicole. “They are a match made in earth sign heaven.”

Like Virgo, Capricorn is pragmatic, hardworking and reliable. “Both have an ‘acts of service’ love language, so they understand each other’s gestures and [ways of showing] affection,” Nicole tells PEOPLE. They also both have a tendency to intellectualize their emotions, making it easy for them to communicate effectively.

“This connection is practical and straightforward, but also very nurturing,” Thomas says. Capricorn is often referred to as the father of the zodiac whereas Virgo gives off definite maternal energy. Because of this, they “can take turns taking the lead.”

In short, “they are a natural fit,” Nicole says. “They’re very good at working together to accomplish their goals.”

“This is a highly productive and peaceful connection,” says Thomas. As a fixed sign, Taurus “may be a bit more dominant in the match,” he explains, but Virgo’s mutable nature gives them a certain amount of flexibility, so that likely won’t be an issue.

These are two signs that seriously crave stability and domesticity. “Both do very well in long-term partnerships,” Nicole says. “There isn’t a lot of jealousy, insecurity or emotional tidal waves,” she explains. Instead, they can build a life based on “similar goals and values,” like loyalty and family. More often than not, she says, this pairing leads to a “committed, dedicated and caring relationship.”

Nicole agrees. “Cancer and Virgo are a match made in caretaker heaven,” she says. They’re both acts-of-service types who “love nothing more than providing and caring for each other.” But, since they don’t necessarily show love in the exact same way, they also balance and compliment one another.

“Cancer is a more nurturing [and] emotional component while Virgo is a more physical or earthly caretaker,” she says. Therefore, it works. Virgo can “provide a safe and strong container for Cancer’s emotional waves” while Cancer can help Virgo “tune into their sensitive side.”

On top of that, they make each other better. Virgos are highly organized and excel at setting boundaries whereas Cancers tend to struggle with saying no and being codependent. Meanwhile, Cancers are known for their intuitive nature and emotional depth while Virgos “often struggle with being vulnerable.” Thus, Nicole explains, “They can really thrive together.”

Scorpio’s dark, secretive nature can sometimes feel “a bit overwhelming to Virgo,” she admits, adding that in some ways, these two don’t make a lot of sense. However, their compatibility comes down to their undeniable chemistry.

A Virgo and Scorpio combination creates “a very interesting result,” she says, “but when done correctly, it’s a magical solution.” As long as they share the same goals, these two are “definitely power couple material.”

“They can balance each other well,” Thomas agrees. Both can bring something to the relationship, so as long as they are willing to “work as a team,” it can be a winning result. If they aren’t able to work together, though, they may “end up resenting one another.”

Luckily, Nicole says, both signs are highly compassionate, loyal and open-minded. “More often than not, they’re able to find an appreciation for each other, making this a divine pairing.”

“This match can be especially challenging,” Thomas says. “Aries is prone to anger while Virgo is prone to perfectionism.” Even more challenging, they tend to be “drawn to one another” at first before things start to sour.

“There seems to be a strong initial magnetism here,” Nicole agrees. Unlike other opposites-attract pairings, though, it doesn’t typically end well for these two. “It seems to become tumultuous and they discover a lack of commonality,” she explains.

Virgo can sometimes be overly critical, bordering on judgmental whereas Aries can be hotheaded and stubborn. “These two will butt heads constantly,” Nicole says. “They rarely see eye to eye on anything [and] neither will back down.”

Sagittarius

According to Thomas, Virgo andSagittariusare truly “one of the most challenging rapports in the zodiac.”

Although they share a mutable aspect, they simply have too many differences to overcome. “They communicate in completely different ways,” says Nicole. “More importantly, their value systems are entirely different.”

Sagittarians are adventurous, fun-loving wanderers while Virgos are pragmatic perfectionists who crave order and stability. Virgos and Sagittarius have fundamentally opposing worldviews.

As a result, “both will feel smothered,” Thomas says. They don’t align so it would “take a lot of effort” to make a relationship work.

Aquarius

In some ways, Virgo and Aquarius have a lot in common. “They are both highly intelligent and motivated yet tend to lack emotional depth,” Nicole tells PEOPLE. In fact, because of this, both can sometimes seem “cold, calculating or unfeeling.” But that’s exactly why they don’t work well together.

“They usually need another sign to help them access [deeper emotions]” and provide balance, she explains. Aquarians tend to pair well with passionate, creative fire signs while Virgos are often drawn to emotional, compassionate water signs.

However, just because they aren’t a great match in the romance department, that doesn’t mean they can’t get along well. In fact, they tend to make really good business partners. “They’re both very astute at creating systems and processes for getting things done,” Nicole says.

Leo

Unsurprisingly, the glamourous, attention-loving Leo isn’t super compatible with the modest, humble and hardworking Virgo.

Because of how vastly different they are, these two won’t do well in a relationship. “They will certainly admire one another, though,” says Thomas. Leo will marvel at how effortlessly chic Virgo is — after all, thanks to their perfectionism and intellect, they often receive praise without really trying. Virgo, meanwhile, will appreciate how confident and charismatic Leos can be.

Still, “this match can struggle with issues of control,” he says, particularly since they have such different values and lifestyles.

Gemini

However, these two may struggle long-term due to their opposing values. Libras crave freedom and spontaneity while Virgos strive for stability, which can be a challenge to overcome.
