Tegan and Saraare the subjects of Hulu’s latest documentary offering.

On Thursday, Sept. 26,PEOPLE is exclusively premieringthe trailerfor Hulu’sFanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara.

The trailer opens with a quick intro to the acclaimed Canadian twin musical duo comprised of Tegan andSara Quin, both of whom identify as gay. Many LGBTQ+ fans found community together and with Tegan herself — or so they thought. Through a series of leaks in 2011, it was revealed that fans weren’t actually corresponding with the singer-songwriter, but rather a catfish.

Fake Tegan, dubbed as “Fegan,” opened up a safety concern as fans and the band alike realized they had access to real Tegan’s personal information, documents, personal health records and even the fan’s identifying information such as their addresses.

“It introduced the idea that it’s someone we know,” Tegan, 44, says in the clip. This level of invasiveness led to her becoming suspicious of everyone in her life, including her then-girlfriend and their closest friends.

Throughout the documentary, Carr and the twins show how deep the catfishing scheme went as more fans came forward with their own experiences divulging their emotions to what turned out to be a fake account. Fans alleged that they were in years-long correspondence with Fegan, with one claiming that the two were in a romantic relationship.

“Fake Tegan systematically destroyed my life,” Tegan confessed.

Fanaticaldives into the complex world of parasocial relationships amid the murky early stages of social media and fan communities, as well as the exploitation of vulnerable communities at the hands of a hacker and stalker.
