Birdsong, who police say was shot seven times in the chest, was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, per KTLA.
A representative with the LAPD did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for additional information.
Known as King Mylik, the Los Angeles native had a 15-1-1 record, with 10 knock-outs. At the time of his death, he was the reigning World Boxing Foundation International Welterweight champion

In a video posted on his Instagramjust a day before his death, Birdsong showed his softer side, sharing that he had recently adopted a Mastiff puppy.
“We got us a good little girl,” he said in part, before joking that the dog had a “big body.”
The boxer’s next fight was set for Oct. 26 against Armenian Gor Yeritsyan on the UFC Fight Pass card.
