“You know,I’ve waited my whole life for him,” Lovato told PEOPLE at a screening of Hulu’sChild Star, which she starred in and directed, in September 2024. “It’s very grounding to have a partner that is so supportive, so loving, so caring. It’s very easy to stay centered with him because I love him so much and he treats me so amazing.”

Lovato (who uses she/they pronouns) and Jutes were first linked after they were photographed holding hands ahead of the release of theireighth studio albumHoly Fvck.

Jutes originally hails from Ottawa, Canada. Per a previousinterview withNuance Magazine, he originally studied film and played basketball, before eventually developing a passion for songwriting while living in Toronto.

He’s an independent musician

Jutes was previously signed to Capitol Records but left the label “to pursue his own independent artist goals,” perNuance Magazine.

“I left because due to Covid mad budgets got cut, and I guess they didn’t want to hold me and not give me the support I needed, which is so blessed of them to do,” he told the publication about his decision to part ways with Capitol Records after two years.

“You hear about labels shelving people or holding them without pushing them so often, and I can’t say how grateful I am that isn’t me,” he added. “I had been wishing I could be indie again for a while just because I love being totally in charge of my own career, so it worked out quite nicely.”

He co-wrote some of Lovato’s songs

Jutes co-wrote Lovato’s tracks “Substance,” “Happy Ending,” and “City of Angels” from their recent albumHoly Fvck. “One of my fav songs i’ve ever worked on,” he wrote in anInstagram postalongside a clip ofLovato’s music video.

“When i got asked to pull up and write for this session i remember thinking wtf am i supposed to do in ademi lovatosession? only to show up and realize she was making one of the hardest rock projects i’ve ever heard,” he continued. “obviously a crazy milestone for me but beyond that i feel so blessed to be a part of something i’m such a big fan of.”

In addition to co-writing some of Lovato’s songs, it seems he might inspire some love songs as well. In an April 2023 interview withCBS Mornings, the former Disney star spoke about returning to the emo genre for her albumHoly Fvck,hinting that her next songs will likely be more upbeat.

“I definitely am in a really good place,” Lovato said. “I don’t know what I’m going to write about on my next album because I’m so happy. It is a really good feeling, but I don’t know what I’m going to do.”

She added: “Definitely a bunch of sappy love songs — for sure.”

He’s been open about his sobriety journey

Like Lovato, Jutes has been candid about his sobriety journey. In July 2022,he marked 100 days of being soberon Twitter. “Learning to cope with my anxiety properly was something i was always too scared to try,” he wrote. “Took a long time to be ready but i’ve never felt better mentally and emotionally. if ur dealing with s— rn that feels never ending just know nothing lasts forever.”

A source told PEOPLE that the pair havebonded over their sobriety journeys. “They joke, laugh, talk about their mutual personal problems, and what they overcame as young people in the music business,” the insider said. “He is in awe of her talent and very supportive.”

He uses his music to cope with his emotions

In his interview withNuance Magazine, he opened up about his passion for songwriting, calling it his “therapy.” “I really live to write songs,” he told the publication. “It’s how I first started being honest about my emotions and mental health, so my connection to it is very deep-rooted.”

He added that he hopes the music he creates inspires other people going through similar situations. “I’ve got over 300 demos on my phone and those are just the recent ones. So, I figured hey no one can tell me what to do anymore, so why hoard this music to myself. Even if a song helps one person then it has a purpose and will also make me a little cash in the process. I feel free these days and want to stop overthinking so much and just let ‘em fly.”

He thinks Lovato is “gorgeous”

In December 2022, Jutes gave his followers a life update onInstagram. He shared a carousel of images that included a cute mirror selfie with Lovato.

“I’m still alive and my friends and gf are still looking absolutely gorgeous,” Jutes captioned the post.

Meanwhile, Lovato talked aboutJutes’ good looksin an episode of the PodcastOne podcastLadyGang. In a clip shared exclusively with PEOPLE, they recalled meeting Jutes while working on their 2022 albumHOLY FVCK.

“The way that I met my boyfriend was actually in a session,” they said, explaining that he walked into the studio and she was immediately attracted to him.

“I texted my friends and was like, ‘Oh my God, the hottest guy just walked In. I am so nervous. I don’t know what to do with myself,' ” they said.

Lovato and Jutes got engaged following a “personal and intimate proposal” on Dec. 16, 2023. Afterward, the couple celebrated with their families at an L.A. restaurant.
