Why Billie Eilish's 'Hit Me Hard and Soft' Tour Is Her 'College Year'

Billie Eilish’s new tour is going to be her “college year.”

In theNovember cover story forVogue, the “Lunch” singer, 22, opened up about herHit Me Hard and Softtour — and her motherMaggie Bairdexplained that despite her belief that everyone should have a “mom on tour,” this set of dates is going to be Eilish’s first one on her own.

While her brother and collaboratorFinneaswill be with the “Birds of a Feather” performer on a few dates, he’ll be promoting his own solo albumFor Cryin' Out Loud, which was released on Friday, Oct. 4. Eilish’s parents also won’t be present at every show.

“It’s sort of our ‘going off to college year,’ I guess,” Baird, 65, told the publication.

Finneas, 27, added, “You want your family to come visit often, you don’t want your family to, like, be the dean of the college, or in your dorm room."

Elsewhere in the interview, Eilish also opened up about her often fraught relationship with touring.

“I’ve had some really dark times on tour,” she said. “For a long time I was kind of living like it was temporary. Like, yeah, I’m touring for now and it’s kind of unpleasant, and whatever. It’ll be over. And the truth is, it’s the rest of my life.”

Eilish explained that she didn’t know she “could make touring enjoyable.”

“I just was very lonely for many years, and I’m not interested in that anymore. I want to enjoy the show as well as my days,” she said.

In arecent episodeofSpotify’s vodcastCountdown To, Eilish discussed what it’s been like to spend time apart from Finneas as he’s focused on his own music.

She admitted that it’s “sad and hard,” but also a relief.

“I feel like I spend all of my time on tour and in rehearsals like ‘Oh my God, Finneas wants to leave’ or ‘Finneas is unhappy.’ I just look up to you so much and want you to have the best time,” Eilish said.

In arecent interview with Guitar.com, Finneas also detailed how he’s priming Eilish toproduce her own musicwithout his help.

“I’ve been setting up Billie’s recording studio for her so she can do home production without me, because she’s very good at it!” he told the outlet. “And it’s funny, I’ve been giving her, like, the bare minimum of stuff, just so that she learns it all."
