Woman Gives Son the Name She 'Always Planned' After Brother and Sister-in-Law 'Stole' It

In ananonymous post on Reddit, the woman explains how her husband’s heritage inspired their naming selection.

“My husband’s has a traditional family name that I love,” she writes in the post. “Basically since he and I were dating and started discussing our future we agreed that our son would have that name: Oisín.”

She adds: “My husband is Irish. Not in the Boston, my great great great grandfather came over in the 1800s kind of way. In the born in Galway kind of way.”

While her husband has Irish heritage, the woman writes that her brother (and his wife) do not.

When the two couples got pregnant at the same time, she was surprised to learn that her sister-in-law — who has no “connection to Ireland” — had chosen the name Oisín Miguel for her son.

Still, the Reddit poster writes that she forged ahead with the name she had selected long ago, “like I told her we would be doing,” naming her own son, born two months later, Oisín Daniel,

“My brother and his wife has as much right to name their child whatever they want,” she writes. “I do not own my name. I have no right to dictate to my brother what he names his kid.”

But now, the woman’s sister-in-law has “flipped out that two cousins will have the same name.”

She writes that her own mom is staying neutral, but was “very surprised that my brother gave his son an Irish name he knew I was planning on using.” Meanwhile, her husband’s Irish family “thinks the whole thing is hilarious.”

The sister-in-law, though, thinks the woman is “copying her,” despite the fact the poster had said she would use the name for years.

Now, the woman wants to know if she’s in the wrong for naming her son the name she “had always planned even after my brother and sister in-law ‘stole’ the name?”

While many commenters agreed that the poster doesn’t “own” the name, several were perplexed as to why the sister-in-law chose it in the first place.

“Husband’s family is right: it’s hilarious!. She’s now stuck her child with a name that has no real meaning for her, and her attempt at drama has been ignored,” wrote one Reddit commenter.

Another offered more blunt advice to the sister-in-law: “In case SIL is reading this: Grow up.”
