In a post onReddit’s “Wedding Shaming” forum, the woman explained that her younger brother got married a few weeks ago. Although the wedding was “lovely,” her feelings about the big day are souring considering she is now being charged for it.

Her brother casually texted her this week, stating that his new wife had yet to receive “$115 each” from the poster and her husband for attending their wedding. The newlywed man added that there’s “no rush,” but directed his sister to where the money should be sent.

“At no point before now was it communicated to me that they were charging guests to attend,” the sister wrote. “Nowhere on the invitation either. Plus, my husband and I already gave them $400 cash in their card.”

The woman assumes that her brother and his wife are charging guests because they had a wedding that was beyond their budget. But she doesn’t think it’s fair to expect guests to make up for the costs.

“This wedding took place at an expensive restaurant downtown in a private room that’s famous for its architecture. No idea why they booked that place if they can’t afford it,” she continued in her post. “No open bar or dance floor. We didn’t even drink alcohol that night and still paid $30 for pop and coffee plus Uber there and back.”

When the woman addressed her concerns to her brother, he responded “all nonchalantly,” saying, “Oh, I thought you knew” and “I forgot to tell you, sorry.”

“So infuriating,” said the poster, who also got married this year but didn’t charge her guests anything.

“It got heated and I eventually told him I would send the money but he can wait now I’m pissed off,” she wrote. “I’m considering not sending anything and if he asks I’ll say, ‘Oh, I forgot.’ "

Reddit users were upset for the woman, commenting that it’s not OK for someone to charge their wedding guests, especially with no heads up beforehand. Many Redditors suggested that she tell her brother that her and her husband’s $400 gift included the wedding fee.

“You gave them $400. That covers it. Tell him to send you your change,” one person wrote, with another joking that she respond, “Hey bro, I put $400 in the card. I thought it was $200/per. Please send back the extra $270. Thanks. Love you and congrats again.”
